Services Provided at Moravian Open Door

1. Housing.

A safe, clean, drug and alcohol-free living environment. This includes private and semi-private rooms, a communal kitchen where clients can prepare meals, on-site laundry facilities, a community living room as well as a beautiful courtyard where clients can socialize.

2. Transitional Housing Support.

A client's caseworker provides the following services:
  • housing referrals for affordable apartments and rooms
  • assistance with various applications for housing programs (i.e. Section 8, the Housing Choice Voucher Program, HRA 2000, NYCHA, and Housing Plus)
  • letter-writing, copying, faxing, mailing and mock housing interviews
  • nursing home referrals, where appropriate

3. Entitlements.

Clients are assisted with obtaining Social Security Income, Social Security Disability, Public Assistance and Veteran benefits.

4. Life Skills.

An on-site Life Skills Center provides training in computer skills, financial literacy, preparing resumes, preparing for and keeping a job, healthy living, and other life skills. Clients have their own email accounts and access to the Internet.

5. Pastoral Counseling.

One-on-one and group counseling is offered by church leaders and counselors. Referrals can be made to local Moravian Churches for in-house counseling support.

6. Employment.

The MOD staff helps clients through every aspect of the job search. This includes scanning the job listings, resume and cover letter development, mock job interviews and collecting letters of reference.

7. Medical and Mental Health.

The nearby Karpas Health Information Center makes available baseline testing for clients and offers classes in many aspects of wellness. Referrals are also made to local providers.

8. Substance Abuse.

Out-patient, in-patient and long-term treatment referrals are provided.

9. Escorts.

MOD staff is available to accompany clients on medical, mental health and social service appointments, as well as to housing interviews.

10. General Advocacy.

Clients are afforded Fair Hearing support, Adult Protective Services and professional assistance.

10. Special Events.

Special dinners, celebrations and other activities are hosted by staff, visiting youth groups, and church groups. Movies, bingo, games, and community events are available to clients.

12. House Meetings.

Monthly house meetings are held for clients and staff to address any concerns within the building.

  • Visiting Nurse Service of NY (home care assessment)
  • East 7th St. Baptist Church (free clothing)
  • St. Francis of Assisi (free meals served daily at 7am)
  • Community Access: Building Homes, Hopes and Futures (academic and vocational training programs)
  • Bellevue Hospital (mental health)
  • Department of Health (HIV, TB and STD Testing and Counseling)
  • Exodus Transitional Community, Inc. (ex-offender assistance with transition)
  • The City of New York Human Resources Administration – Adult Protective Services
