Case Study: Melvin
Former MOD client Melvin represents what MOD clients can offer the world. Melvin now hosts Artistic Talent on Brooklyn Community Access Television, where he introduces at-risk youth to the healing power of art.
Melvin is deeply committed to Uth Turn, a nonprofit effort involving churches, the criminal justice system, the Fund for Community Leadership Development and the New York Theological Seminary.
“It's rewarding to help at-risk youth focus in a positive direction,” Melvin explains. “These are court-mandated, court adjudicated kids – maybe kids with substance abuse problems, what have you – so what we do is provide services for them. I give them counseling, group sessions. And I use art as art therapy so it relieves the anger and stress. They're missing a father figure. Caring and love has broken down in the home. So I become a father figure. It's our mission to give back to the community, to try to find ways of helping kids.”
MOD helped Melvin help himself. Now he's helping countless others.
Artistic Talent can be seen in Brooklyn on BCAT on the third Thursday of the month at 2pm and 10pm on Time Warner Cable channel 35, Cablevision channel 68, and streaming live online at www.bcat.tv/bcat.

MOD Clients' Graduation Corner
R.H. (73) had entered MOD in September of 1992. Robert used the support of MOD and its donors to overcome homelessness. Today, Robert works as a substance abuse counselor and lives in his own apartment. He is truly a model to MOD staff and clients that are currently seeking ways to improve their homeless situations. Robert regularly returns to MOD to pick up mail and show support to MOD staff and clients in transition. Robert has also made client referrals to MOD.
B.J. (66) and Barbara (63) shared a room at MOD since September 14, 2003. Both ladies made the transition from MOD to their own apartment at Cabrini Apartments on November 3, 2005. Barbara continues to visit MOD. This was expected since she was very active in the MOD community during her stay.
J.P. (63) entered MOD on September 15, 1999. John participated in training programs and was able to acquire marketable skills. He became employed with the U.S. Postal Service and enjoyed his work. When John learned that the apartment he would be moving into would be right around the corner from his job he exuded much elation. John continues to work with the U.S. Postal Service.
R.R. (62) served in the United States Marine Corps from 1962 – 1966. He entered MOD in March of 1998. Ralph often would share his Vietnam combat experience with clients and staff. He also would lament about having his own place to live. When Ralph learned that he was accepted into Kenmore Hall he smiled and expressed his happiness by stating “I am glad to be getting my own place.” R.R. still visits MOD clients and staff.
Each client is an example of a person motivated to take charge of their life and make the necessary changes to improve upon their situation. The staff is very proud of each person's accomplishment. All of the above clients remain in good standing with MOD and will continue to be connected and a family member. Best Wishes!
